Slow Horses

Genre – Spy Thriller

Slow Horses by Mick Herron is the first novel in the Slough House series. The story is about a group of MI5 agents who have all made significant blunders in their careers. Instead of getting fired, they are sent to Slough House, a decrepit building, and given boring, monotonous tasks with the hope they will quit.

When a young Pakistani student is kidnapped and threatened with live beheading on the internet, the slow horses from Slough House become involved. Each hopes for redemption and a return to MI5 Headquarters and meaningful duty. The slow horses must put aside their differences and come together to work as a team to discover what forces lie behind the kidnapping.

Mick Herron’s words create scenes that play out before your eyes. His characters are well developed and engaging. He has a knack for suspense laced with humor. If you don’t have time to read the book or you’d prefer to watch the miniseries, it is available on Apple TV+.
